The United States Solheim Cup team remained undefeated on American soil with a 16-12 win at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, but it wasn’t until the 11th match of the day concluded that the outcome was determined. Morgan Pressel’s 3&2 win ensured the 14 points necessary for the Americans to retain the cup.
The two teams entered the singles matches tied at eight points each to set the stage for the dramatic final day. Midway through the singles, the Europeans were in strong contention for their first victory away from home until the Americans took control on the back nine and made it clear the 11th staging of the biennial event would again favor the United States.
PING pro Angela Stanford put the first point on the board for the U.S. with a 5&4 win in the second match out. Her defeat of Becky Brewerton came as the Americans began to turn the tide on the back nine. For the week, Stanford earned 1.5 points in her third Solheim Cup appearance.
Her early victory allowed her to assume the role of cheerleader. She was the first to greet rookie Solheim Cup participant Michelle Wie following her 1-up win over Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson. Wie finished her Solheim Cup debut 3-0-1 to earn the most points for either team.
PING pros Maria Hjorth (2-1-2) and Anna Nordqvist (2-2) competed for the European team.
