The pressure of being chased by the greatest female golfer of all time in a tournament hosted by the current No.1 player in the game didn’t deter PING pro Angela Stanford in her wire-to-wire victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.
For Stanford, who held off Annika Sorenstam by one shot to win at Guadalajara Country Club in Mexico, it was her second win this season and third of her career.
The elite field of 36 gathered at the course where Ochoa honed her skills—her childhood home is next to the clubhouse—to battle for the $200,000 first prize. In the end, Stanford accepted the trophy from fellow PING pro Ochoa in front of the 20,000 fans who’d watched as Stanford’s 13-under-par total moved her over the $1 million season-earnings mark for the first time in her career. Ochoa finished tied for 14th as a first-time tournament host.
In securing her fifth consecutive top five finish, Stanford relied on 14 PING clubs, including a G10 driver, a combination of i5, G10 and G2HL irons, a Rapture V2 3-wood, a G10 5-wood, four Tour wedges and a Karsten Series B60 putter.
PING irons and drivers topped the Darrell Survey club counts.
